Introduction
When Bro. Branham came on the scene the Pentecostals thought He had a word of knowledge gift. they misunderstood, he did speak the Word of Knowledge, but he was a prophet, and more than a prophet, the Messenger to this age.
There is a difference in a prophet and these nine spiritual gifts. These are not predestined gifts to the body, they fall on the body, God just uses individuals to do it.
Listen how Bro. Branham explains it:
Many people gets it mixed up sometimes about gifts and callings. Gifts and callings are without repentance. God foreordains those things and sends them on the earth. And then a vindicates them that they are.
Here not long ago, a person walked to me. Now…And many times they do, and said, “THUS SAITH THE LORD, The Lord said, ‘Do this.’ If you didn’t go to a certain place, or a certain thing, and do a certain thing, the Lord’s going to strike you and take this gift away from you.”
Now, that isn’t true. That isn’t true. Gifts and callings are without repentance. There is spirits that’s in the Church. That’s true, such as gifts of prophecy, healing, and so forth. But they’re in the entire body.
They may fall upon one person tonight, a prophecy, and It might not never fall on that person again; It might be somewhere else in the body. And those spirits are supposed to be judged. “Let one speak and two or three judge,” said Paul.
Now, those are the spirits of the gifts that’s in the Church. But the only person that has a right to say, THUS SAITH THE LORD, is an a vindicated prophet. You never seen anybody judging Isaiah, or Jeremiah, or those people.
They were prophets, foreordained and borned in the world to be prophets. And they foresaw the thing by a vision, and then said, “THUS SAITH THE LORD,” for the Lord had already said it. 50-0405 - Expectation
There’s nine spiritual gifts in the church. They operate anywhere in the church.
For instance, if this tent here tonight concealed the entire body of Christ. The Holy Spirit leads the body of Christ. And in this body there’s nine spiritual gifts.
They are here in the body. Gifts of healing, gifts of prophecy, it might fall upon someone here tonight, this lady setting here, this man, or this man; and he may give a prophecy and it would be true. But it would never work on him maybe again.
See, that doesn’t make him a prophet. That makes…We’re in the body. By one Spirit we’re baptized in the body and subject to these gifts.
And when the body’s setting here…Remember what Paul said, “If something be revealed to one setting by, let him hold his peace and so forth,” like that? That’s the apostolic church. That’s where it should be now.
And here might be one tonight with the prayer of faith, that would pray a prayer of faith that would heal someone. That gift of healing might be on them tonight.
It might be upon this lady here tomorrow night, and upon this man over here the next night. It might come back to her. It’s in the church—the body.
Now, those are the nine spiritual gifts that’s in the body now. They work through the body. But then there is gifts and callings without repentance. 50-0810 - Expectations
Bro. Branham always taught this.
Now, there’s nine spiritual gifts goes in each local body, which is tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecies, and so forth.
But there is five predestinated offices of the church: apostles, prophets, teachers, pastors and evangelists. That’s what God set in the church. The Holy Spirit…That’s a office.
The Holy Spirit might fall on one tonight and speak in tongues, and the other give the prophecy, and so forth. And then next night It might be on somebody else, and somebody else, like that. That’s local gifts in the body to keep us straight.
But in the church alone, five offices: apostles (means missionaries), apostles, prophets, teachers, pastors, and evangelists, God sets those in the church. 62-0627 - We Would See Jesus
Both kinds of gifts are from God. Both fall on the just and the unjust, but one is a predestined office and another is a gift that falls in the body.
Both of these are different from natural talents and abilities. Those come from God too.
What is the gift of “the word of knowledge?
Lexham Theological Wordbook γνῶσις
γνῶσις (gnōsis). n. fem. knowledge. Designates cognitive knowledge of something, or that which is known.
The most basic word for knowledge in the NT, gnōsis, is used 29 times and generally refers to cognitive knowledge.
Mary uses this in her song about Jesus.
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people By the remission of their sins,
Jesus accuses the Pharisees of taking away the key of gnosis
Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
Godly knowledge, or understanding, is essential. What you don’t understand, believe, but add to your faith knowledge.
A true eagle understands eagle language.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
ἀκούω (akouō). vb. to hear, listen, understand, pay attention. Describes the act of hearing or listening to a person with emphasis on the accurate understanding of that which is spoken.
Now, to prove that’s right. I go down here, and here’s a drunk coming along the street, and with some other man’s wife on his arms, and cussing, and taking God’s Name in vain, and everything else like that.
“Say, did you hear what that preacher said? Did you?” “Yeah, I heard It!” That don’t mean he’s got Eternal Life. “He that understandeth My Word,” he that is an eagle! 65-0418M - It Is The Rising Of The Sun
We need knowledge. We need understanding, yet even knowledge from God can be used wrong.
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
Knowledge must be constrained by love.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
Love, God’s love, it’ll take the place of speaking in tongues, and that’s all right. It’ll take the place of gifts, and wonders, and signs, and everything else. If you haven’t got love to accompanies that, what good does the signs do you?
The greatest of all the gifts is wisdom, the second is knowledge.
We’ve gone after gifts; we’ve gone after this; we’ve gone after that, because the supernatural was done. But, brother, don’t seek gifts; don’t seek favor with denomination; seek the love of God. 56-0611 - Hear Ye Him
The Word of Knowledge is not you understanding something, but it is basically making someone understand something they didn’t understand.
And then, when you receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost, that is the completion of the Holy Spirit taking up Its abode in you to manifest gifts: speaking with tongues, interpretation of tongues, gifts of power, wisdom, knowledge, understanding.
The man said, last night, said, “Where did you get your education for these things?” Well, said, “I’ve come out of great seminaries and we’ve never had such as that ever taught in a seminary that I ever heard.”
I said, “It don’t come from seminary.” I said, “I’m poor, with a seventh-grade education.” Ten, fifteen years ago, I couldn’t hardly write my own name, and I cannot do much better today. But it comes through inspiration. See? I said, “Then watch it.”
“Why,” he said, “you never watch where you’re going in the Bible. You just grab the thing and run all through the Bible.” And said, “It just all comes right together.”
I said, “A hour after I get out of the pulpit, I couldn’t tell you what I said.” See? It’s not me, I don’t know. See? It’s Him putting it together, I don’t know. See. I can’t tell you.
I just get up here and Something strikes me and I just know the Scriptures, like that. You might ask me the Scripture a hour later, I wouldn’t know, see. But it just comes like that. And you watch and see if it’s the right or wrong once.
(He compares that to the discernment line)
I haven’t got anything to do with it. I just yield myself to the Holy Spirit and He does the talking. And there’s the whole thing. That’s right.
So, it isn’t I. It’s not me. If you judge that I have the Holy Spirit, then it’s the Holy Spirit. And if you judge that it isn’t the Holy Spirit, then you might think it was a devil.
But the thing of it is, compare it with This and see what it compares with. Uh-hum. The Holy Spirit wrote This. So, if it compares with That and brings That out truth, then it must be of God, then. 54-0516 - Questions And Answers (Law Having A Shadow)
This would be done decently and in order. (Women and spiritual gifts- Charismatic women)
What is Godly Knowledge? This knowledge is a part of the divine nature. It is distinct from worldly knowledge, which comes from satan.
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
Knowledge, now, that don’t mean worldly knowledge, ’cause that’s foolishness to God; but knowledge to judge, judge (what?) right from wrong.
How do you judge it, then, if you’ve got Christian knowledge with your virtue and faith? You judge whether the Word is right or wrong.
And if you can lay aside all your creeds, and all your unbelief, everything that you claim you have done, then you have knowledge to believe that God cannot lie. “Let every man’s word be a lie, but Mine be true.”
(Knowledge of what?)
1. Knowledge that what God said, God is able to perform.
1. Knowledge that what God said, God is able to perform.
(Abraham)
2. Knowledge that the Bible doesn’t contradict Itself.
2. Knowledge that the Bible doesn’t contradict Itself.
(Matthew 28:19 and Acts 2:38)
But when you can see that the Scripture is not contradictory, that you can say that; and can see, that, by the revelation of God, the whole Word is wrote in mysteries, and only the knowledge of God can reveal It; then when you get and say, punctuate every Word of God with an “amen,” then add that to your faith.
3. Knowledge to judge whether “I should be born again or join a church.”
3. Knowledge to judge whether “I should be born again or join a church.”
4. Knowledge that “The days of miracles is not passed.”
4. Knowledge that “The days of miracles is not passed.”
Now, next thing, the preacher will tell you, and many people say, “These things that you read in the Bible, they were for another day.
Now, I’ll tell you why. Because, we don’t need those things today. We don’t need it. See? We shouldn’t.
We don’t have to practice those things, Divine healing. We don’t practice speaking with tongues, in the church, to keep our church straight. And we don’t do this.”
“I don’t know. We shouldn’t do that today. Only thing I think we should do, we should learn to speak properly before the crowd.
We should go and let a psychiatrist test our mind, to see if we’re able to be able to present ourself, if our IQ is high enough to do it, and so forth like that.
And we hold the greatest congregations. We build our organization.”
Christ never sent me to build organization. Christ sent me to build individuals to the stature of Jesus Christ, that they might be the powerhouse and the dwelling place of the Spirit, by His Word.
By His Word, see, build up the individual to that place. Not build an organization to a greater denomination, but build the individual to sons and daughters of God.
Now when they begin to say, “Well, we don’t have to accept that today…” You do have to. It must be.
The Scriptures cannot lie. “And They are no private interpretation,” the Bible said. You just believe It the way It’s written There. You’ve got to have these things.
And the only way you’ll ever be able to have them, is have Heaven-born knowledge. And Heaven-born knowledge will vindicate the Word.
I believe in genuine, Holy Ghost knowledge. Holy Ghost knowledge will always punctuate the Word with “amen.”
When you get these things that seem to contradict themselves, in the Bible, you sit down and study it, and prayerfully like that. And the first thing you know, the Holy Spirit begins to move in. After a while you see it ties together, and there you got it. That’s knowledge.
Knowledge; not worldly (it reasons). Any kind of worldly knowledge reasons. But faith has no reasoning.
God reveals to you a certain-certain thing is going to happen, every scientist in the world could tell you, “It’s contrary. It could not happen.” You believe it, anyhow.
Now, knowledge, now, not worldly knowledge, but it’s Heavenly knowledge. And Heavenly knowledge, when God is the fountain of all knowledge, and God is the Word, then, if you’ve got Heavenly knowledge, you believe the Word, and you reason anything by the Word.
Now, that kind of knowledge that you learn out of some book, you better throw it out in the garbage can. Come to this knowledge. When God said, “He’s the same yesterday, today, and forever,” say, “Amen.”
Yes, sir. Not to the twelve; it’s for all. When you get that kind of a faith, when your faith punctuates it, every bit, with an “amen,” then you say, “All right,” add that to it. 62-1014M - The Stature Of A Perfect Man
